On March 1, 2022, two portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) standards promulgated by the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MOE) came into effect. This standard applies to the on-site emergency determination of toluene and other 52 volatile organic compounds in the ambient air around the site of an environmental emergency, and other volatile organic compounds can also be qualitatively analyzed and concentrated.
FPI's self-developed EXPEC-3500 portable gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) participated in the standard method validation work organized by the standard validation unit. It has been verified that the detection indexes of EXPEC-3500 GC-MS fully meet the analytical test requirements of the standard, and the detection results are accurate and reliable.
EXPEC-3500 portable GC-MS is a portable instrument based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technology and can be used for on-site analysis of organic pollutants in environmental emergencies, and can be equipped with a mobile monitoring vehicle, or can be carried over the shoulder or on foot to the site for testing.
EXPEC-3500 GC-MS in Emergency Monitoring
The traditional means of monitoring is sampling followed by laboratory analysis, but disadvantages include poor timeliness and distortion of concentration levels. FPI's portable GC-MS solves these problems by allowing on-site analysis of water and ambient air samples at the site of a pollution incident.
(1). Accurate qualitative and quantitative results at the laboratory level within minutes, providing data support for rapid decision-making and solving urgent problems at the site.
(2). On-site analysis results truly reflect the level of pollution concentration, providing a basis for assessing the efficiency of disposal measures and the development of further disposal programs and can assure pollution impact assessment.
(3). In addition to the advantages mentioned earlier, the FPI EXPEC-3500 GC-MS also has the advantages of good portability, excellent shock resistance, intelligent and convenient software, and easy instrument maintenance.
The EXPEC-3500 portable GC-MS provides fast and effective characterization and quantification of 56 VOCs in water and 52 VOCs in ambient air. The linearity (R2 > 0.99), detection limit (water quality: 0.246 ~ 1.13 µg/L; ambient air: 0.641 ~ 5.04 μg/m3) and precision (water quality: 2.1% ~ 14.1%; ambient air: 3.19% ~ 13.9%) of each compound can provide a scientific data basis for rapid on-site detection and auxiliary decision-making, and meet the requirements of environmental emergency and other on-site monitoring requirements.

FPI's self-developed EXPEC-3500 portable GC-MS is now widely used in the national environmental monitoring field and has played an essential role in domestic environmental emergency monitoring, on-site support for major national conferences, and emergency detection drills.
